City of Milwaukee - Painter (Bridge and Iron)


THE PURPOSE:
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works, Street and Bridge Section, operates 20 movable bridges and maintains over 200 City-owned bridge structures, consisting of movable bridges, fixed bridges, viaducts and pedestrian bridges. The Bridge and Iron painter prepares the metal surfaces of these and other structures for painting and applies primers, intermediate coats of paint by spray gun, brush roller or as directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • 20% Erect and work from scaffolding, needle beam scaffolding, extension and step ladders; work at heights up to 100 feet.
  • 25% Prepare steel surfaces on bridges, viaducts or other steel structures by sandblasting, waterblasting, scraping, brushing, chipping, grinding, or using a needle gun, etc.
  • 10% Apply primers, intermediate and finish coats of paint to structural steel members.
  • 10% Clean and properly maintain spray guns, paint hoses, brushes, blast machines, vehicles, barges and any other equipment required in blasting and painting operations.
  • 20% Perform duties of a house painter.
  • 5% Work from barges and highlift equipment.
  • 5% Perform graffiti removal operations.
  • 5% Perform other related duties as assigned.
NOTE: The person hired into this position is expected to perform the functions typically associated with this trade at the journey level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Valid Wisconsin Commercial – Driver’s License Class A. 
  2. Residency in the city of Milwaukee within 6 months of appointment and throughout employment.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience as a Journey level Painter is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a bridge and iron painter as described above.
  • Be a Journeyed Painter or have four years of equivalent experience.
  • Be able to interpret building and bridge engineering plans.
  • Have a good knowledge of and ability to follow current safety procedures.
  • Be in good physical condition and not be allergic to paint chemicals and fumes.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and bridge structures.
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 100 feet and over water.
  • Should be reliable, industrious, careful, able to get along with others and be able to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to proficiently use and maintain hand paint brush, roller, and spray painting equipment.
  • Proficiency in application of paint, varnish, polyurethane and industrial coatings.
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 100 pounds of force on occasion.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer with the Microsoft Windows operating system is desirable.

THE CURRENT HOURLY WAGE (PR984) is $ 27.14 per hour (2009 Rates) with excellent benefits. Hours of work are 6:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of training and experience, written and/or practical/performance test and/or oral interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to the selection process. Selection process weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
The examination will be held as soon as practical after JUNE 4, 2010. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice. However, if a sufficient number of candidates are not available, recruitment will be continued until the needs of the city are met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time and place of the examination. Persons not accepted to an examination or removed from an eligible list may file a written appeal (including the basis upon which the appeal is made) which must be received by the City Service Commission no late than ten calendar days after the rejection notice was mailed.
